Obituary of Bill McKinnon

McKINNON – William (Bill)

February 19, 1951 – November 12, 2021

“They don’t make ‘em like Bill anymore.”

Bill passed away early on the morning of November 12th, 2021 at Stedman Community Hospice in Brantford, Ontario, after a quiet and inspiring battle with cancer. In his final hours, he was surrounded by his loving family:  his wife of 43 years, Shelley; his son Robert, partner Josée and grandchildren Sacha and Emily; his son Eric; and his daughter Ceilidh and her husband Lorne.

He was pre-deceased by his parents, “Bunce and Joe,” and his brother Robin. He leaves behind a large and adoring family:  Robin’s children, Lisa Antsey (Scott), Marcia Moulton (Eric) and Bill; Murdock (Sheila) and their children, Warren Thompson (Lisa) and Chris Thompson (Lisa); Marguerite Kirby (Jack) and her children, Brandon, Sean and Corey-Lynn (Johnny); Anne-Corey Shannon (Mike) and their children, Danielle Coulter (Scott), Erica Creighton (Tyler) and Keegan (Julie); Priscilla Simmons and her children Taylor (Rachel) and Noelle; Christina O’Grady (Kim) and their children, Scarlett and Joe. He is also survived by many in-laws:  David Sargent (Shirley) and their children, William and Matthew (Paige); Glenn Sargent (Eneke) and their children, Wayne (Heidi), Jason and Tanya Stephens (Ryan); Judy Sargent and her children, Melissa and Amanda Valade (Rob); and Steven Sargent. Bill made a tremendous impact on everyone he met in the 70 years that he shared with us. To some he was a life-long friend and a trusted confidant; to others he was a leader and a mentor. He was well-known in the community through his involvement with CYO basketball, Grand River slow pitch league and his engagement with youth sports. He also had a distinguished career in manufacturing at Dafoe and Dafoe, Wescast Industries and Alumabrite\Kromet where he made many deep and lasting friendships. In later life, he was an avid photographer with a particular interest in nature and wildlife. Our family is incredibly thankful for the outstanding staff and beautiful facilities at Stedman Community Hospice who ensured that his final hours were serene and dignified.

The family will receive friends at the McCleister Funeral Home, 495 Park Road N. Brantford on Monday from 2-4 and 6-8 pm. A Celebration of Bill’s life will be held in the chapel on Tuesday at 11 am. Cremation has taken place. Donations may be made in memory of Bill to the Stedman Community Hospice or to a local hospice facility in your area. Condolences and memories may be shared with the family at www.mccleisterfuneralhome.ca
