VAUGHAN – Edwin R. “Ted”
June 24, 1921 – October 31, 2018
Passed away peacefully on Wednesday October 31, 2018 at the Brantford General Hospital, at the age of 97. Born in Scotland, Ontario, Ted was 22 years old when he began his wartime service with the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) in 1943. Ted was a courageous and highly skilled navigator and bomb-aimer. He flew in both Lancaster-Halifax bombers in 33 missions before the war ended in 1945. After the war, Ted returned to Canada and worked as a security guard for Cockshutt Plow Company. He quickly moved up the ranks and 33 years later was president of the company that acquired Cockshutt, White Motor Company. At the time of retirement Ted was Vice-President of White Consolidated Industries. Aside from his impressive career, Ted was actively involved in many organizations, including United Way, Boy Scouts and Junior Achievement. Ted was known for his quick wit, good humour and calm demeanor. He was an intellectual with a curiosity for lifelong learning and a love of reading. He especially loved to talk about the stock markets. Ted remained physically active and mentally sharp until the end. His everlasting love and care for Audrey during her final years typified his devotion to family. A family that cherishes cottage memories at Bluewater Beach and Port Dover, among many other wonderful memories. We are forever grateful for Ted’s selfless caring and shared wisdom. He will continue to be our role-model. Ted is predeceased by his beloved wife of 69 years, Audrey Beatrice Vaughan, his loving daughter Shirley Surgeoner, as well as close siblings Joseph Vaughan and Evelyn Strong. Ted will be greatly missed by his son-in-law Gordon Surgeoner (Shirley) and his family, including children Brae (Luke), Drew (Jennifer), Jade (Ben) and grandchildren Aspen, Lily and Rilen; eldest son Gary (Patsy) and his family, including children Aaron (Angie), Amber (Kevin), Brandon (Marcy), Brandi (Steve) and grandchildren Keigan, Brady, Kayson and Georgia; youngest son Lary (Carrie) and their daughter Shannon (Fonzie), and grandchildren Austin, Kaiden, Carter and Carson; coffee buddies, Fred Todd and Leo Schiappa; long-term family friend, Norma McMinn; loyal pet dog, Spike.
